SUMMER ATTRACTIONS
Our best attraction is the quiet countryside and clear starry night skies which
you can enjoy by campfire with a bottle of wine. If you were looking for a
little more excitement there are a variety of attractions within 45 minutes of
our location. South of us is the Tottenham Steam Train as well the Falconry
Centre. There is a casino (Georgian Downs) 20 minutes north of us with live
horse racing on Tuesday and Saturday nights. 40 minutes away is the very large
Casino Rama which often features live entertainment. There is a quaint cinema
downtown Alliston as well as a big cinema 25 minutes away in Barrie. The
Military Base Borden is 5 minutes up the road and they have excellent gym
facilities as well as a museum. There are at least 3 other museums (Dufferin
Country Museum, Simcoe County Museum, South Simcoe Pioneer Museum) within 5-20
minutes driving distance. 10 minutes from us is the Nottawasaga Inn - a 5 star
hotel with one of Ontario's best golf courses and many other recreational
activities - tennis courts, gym, pool, etc. We are 15-20 minutes to Cookstown
which has the most antique stores in Ontario per capita. There is Drysdale's
Christmas Tree Farm which has quite a nice gift shop for Christmas stuff and
offers many activities throughout the year. Nicholson Dams has canoes and
paddle boats. Earl Rowe Provincial Park has camping, hiking trails, and a nice
swimming pool. There is a great little spa (Head to Toe: 435-6175) downtown
whose staff can make house calls here for manicures, pedicures, and in-room
therapeutic massages. There are several live theatres (Black Horse, Griffin) in
the area as well as a cafe (Millpond) downtown that often has jazzy type
concerts. There is a of pub in Alliston called the Winchester Arms and in the
surrounding environs (Muddy Water Tavern in Beeton or the Loretto Tavern where
there always lots of country music). I would recommend Barrie (30 minutes away)
if you are looking for nightlife. Highly recommended is St. Marie Among the
Hurons in Midland (re-creation of a 16th century missionary village) as well as
Collingwood and Wasaga Beach where there are lots beach activities and events
such as the 1812 War Enactment and the Elvis Festival. Canada's Wonderland is
about 40 minutes south of us.
WINTER ACTIVITIES
The closest Ski and Snow shoe trail option outside of the Bruce Trail would be
the Tiffin Conservation Centre about 15 minutes north west of here on the
outskirts of a hamlet called Utopia. Their number is 424-1479. Their office is
open on Friday (closes at 4). They said they have some marked but not
maintained trails. I don't know how long the trails are but they said they have
maps at the office there. The people at the outdoor outfitters store (Sojourns)
in Barrie 705-739-9694 really know locations if you need to know more. They
recommend trails in Spring Water Park and something called the Ganarasqa trail
near snow valley. There is no number to call these places so you are best to
call Sojourn again for more details. They also recommended Horseshoe Valley.
Their number is 705-835-2790. They are a little far away - about 45 minutes
north west of us but they do have at least one official trail for snowshoeing.
We are only 10 minutes from the Mansfield Ski Slopes, 20 minutes to Snow
Valley, 30 minutes to Mount St Louis Moonstone, and about 45 minutes to
Collingwood.
